The Lugana DOC is a new designation as its consortium was founded in 1990 and since then it has been taking care of the promotion of the Lugana brand in the world. This designation is based on the vinification of an extraordinary grape variety: the Trebbiano di Lugana or Turbiana that has unique features and it has its perfect habitat on the southern area of the Garda Lake. The Turbiana is a quite aromatic variety but, amongst the white grape varieties in Italy, is probably the best one for being able to produce wines with a great ageing potential, characterised by a great amount of polyphenols. Recently great wine-producers have become even more appreciated and respected all over the world, one of them is certainly Ca dei Frati who, thanks to its Lugana I Frati and Brolettino wines, is now well-known all over Europe and even further. Another incredible producer is the award-winning Provenza Ca Maiol, loved for the incredible quality of its wines. Lugana is produced in 5 different types: Lugana Base, to be enjoyed young and fresh, Lugana Superiore, aged at least for one year after the harvest, Lugana Riserva, aged for 24 months before releasing (6 of which in the bottle), Lugana Vendemmia Tardiva, an experimental wine that comes from the vinification of over-ripened grapes, but it is not a sweet wine, and finally the Lugana Spumante made with metodo classico or Charmat or Martinotti methods.

Ca dei Frati is probably the most famous wine producer of Lugana, the area south of the Garda Lake which comprises of the towns of the Desenzano del Garda, Sirmione, Pozzolengo, Lonato and Peschiera del Garda. The family company, run by Igino, Gian Franco and Anna Maria Dal Cero, was founded in 1939 when Felice del Cero from Verona bought the estate in Sirmione and over the years he began to stand out in the national and international market. Ca dei Frati winery has never stopped improving and growing; they recently bought a vineyard in Valpolicella and they broadened their products range. Today Ca dei Frati owns 150 hectares of vines and it produces around 2 million bottles a year and some of them are very famous like Lugana Brolettino and Benaco Bresciano Ronchedone.
